Level Outcomes:
GOAL: All Camelview Second
grade students will make year’s academic reading progress
and increase their reading comprehension as measured by the
DRA quarterly assessments by improving reading fluency, and
integrating phonics and phonemic awareness.
GOAL: All Camelview second grade will increase
number sense through building understanding of place value
and expanded notation to 999, number facts to sums of 20,
and counting money to $5.00, and students will use this information
efficiently when problem solving.

Advice to Parents:
• Ask your child what he/she learned at school each
day.
• Check your child’s backpack for important documents
and homework.
• Read to and with your child everyday.
• Be consistent about expectations you have for your
child’s learning time at home. (i.e. read and do homework
before playing outside, watching TV, playing video games.)
• Make sure your child is getting plenty of sleep each
night.
• Communicate with your child’s teacher on a regular
basis. (i.e. notes, phone calls, scheduled appointments) |

Math:
Our math instruction is hands-on, which means children are
working to solve problems with manipulatives. Children develop
and share strategies to help make math meaningful to them.
Sharing our strategies and thinking is very important, as
we learn from each other’s ideas. The learners of today
will be the problem-solvers of tomorrow. In second grade,
we explore many different mathematical ideas and concepts,
including geometry, probability, measurement, place value,
number sense, counting money, telling time, patterns, and
solving problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division. We also learn many mathematical games to practice
basic number facts and continue developing critical thinking
and reasoning skills.
"It is only when
you build from within that you really understand something.
If children don't build from within and you just try to explain
it or tell them how to do a problem then it's not really learned.
It is only rote memorization, and that's not understanding."

Reading:
In second grade the year in reading begins with each teacher
giving the Developmental Reading Assessment or the DRA to
every student in their class. This assessment gives the accuracy
rate, comprehension level and fluency of the reader. After
all students have been tested reading groups are put together
with similar readers in the same group. One class might have
as many as five or six reading groups. During the week, reading
groups are called together to read books on their level. There
are different comprehension techniques, phonemic awareness
lessons and reading strategies that are worked on during reading
groups. As students improve they may move into different reading
groups and progress up the reading scale. The goal of our
reading program is to promote life long readers who feel confident
in their abilities to read alone, with others and out loud.
Our program is specific to each child and helps them to read
their best on their given level.
Writing:
Camelview second graders love to write! Each day, students
write in their draft books or writer’s workshop folders.
Students write a variety of genres, including personal narratives,
stories, informational reports, communication (letters, notes),
and poetry, all aligning with the Arizona State Standards.
These young authors also have the opportunity to publish their
pieces in different forms. We assess students using the Six-Traits
model, scoring each piece for ideas and content, sentence
fluency, voice, word choice, organization, and conventions.
Science:
Our science explorations take us from insects to balance and
motion to weather. We begin by learning about the life cycle
of various insects. We watch as mealworms and caterpillars
change into beetles and butterflies right before our eyes.
During our balance and motion activities, we observe, investigate
and question the laws of motion while studying objects and
the forces that act upon them. Our weather investigations
take our learning into the sky as we measure, record and compare
changes in the earth’s weather conditions and patterns.
Social
Studies: Throughout the school year
Social Studies standards are integrated in all subject areas.
Students have the opportunity to read about historic figures
and the role they play in the history of our country. They
explore the significance of holidays and the contributions
of those associated with them. Strong emphasis is placed on
building a classroom community through cooperative learning
strategies. Through the Junior Achievement program, Second
grade students are introduced to how government and businesses
operate within a community, and how we all play a role within
our community.
