Philosophy:  The first grade teachers believe all first grade students should have their needs met by individualized instruction. We utilize small groups, cooperative learning, and hands on activities to meet each student’s needs.

Grade Level Outcomes
Reading Goal: All Camelview first grade students will achieve one year’s growth in phonemic and phonetic fluency as measured by a pre and post DRA Reading Assessment.

Mathematics Goal: All Camelview first grade will build number sense by identifying and representing numbers through 100, combining numbers to 10, and constructing models to represent beginning place value concepts, as assessed by the district math assessment.

Advice to Parents
• Have your child to school on time each day.
• Read to and with your child every night for a minimum of 15 minutes.
• Count objects at home around the house to reinforce number skills.
• Make sure your child gets 10-12 hours of sleep a night.
• If you have any concerns about your child’s academic progress, please contact your child’s teacher.

 

Curriculum

 

Writing Journal Writing: In first grade students are learning how to listen to sounds to form their words. The teachers model writing strategies through shared writing and then students write on their own independently. Teachers confer with students during writing time to meet their individual needs. This year they will be working on personal narrative, nonfiction, fiction, poetry, procedural, and functional text. Reading: In first grade students are learning how to incorporate a variety of strategies to read grade level text including:
:• Looking at the pictures.
• Context clues.
• Initial letters
• Using known parts of words
• Finger to word match
• Identifying sight words
• “Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?”
• Reading like you talk in a natural voice.
• Understanding a variety of text.

Math: In first grade we are learning to solve a variety of word problems based on student created strategies. Through small groups, teachers help students to become more efficient problem solvers. We encourage students to utilize math manipulatives including:

• Fingers • Blocks
• Cubes • Base 10 blocks
• Pictures • One hundreds chart
• Number line

Science: In science, we use an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to introduce students to scientific investigation. In first grade our units are Solids and Liquids; Pebbles, Sand, and Silt; and New Plants. These basic concepts are expanded on in second and third grade. Students are encouraged to interact and experiment with many scientific tools in a fun way! Social Studies: In first grade students learn about different components of a community. Students participate in an activity called community circle to get to know each other and build a sense of community and belonging in the classroom.
