Writing:
In first grade students are learning how to listen to sounds
to form their words. The teachers model writing strategies
through shared writing and then students write on their
own independently. Teachers confer with students during
writing time to meet their individual needs. This year they
will be working on personal narrative, nonfiction, fiction,
poetry, procedural, and functional text. To see more about

Science:
In science, we use an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to
introduce students to scientific investigation. In first
grade our units are Solids and Liquids; Pebbles, Sand, and
Silt; and New Plants. These basic concepts are expanded
on in second and third grade. Students are encouraged to
interact and experiment with many scientific tools in a
fun way! To see more about what students are learning in

Social
Studies: In first grade students learn about
different components of a community. Students participate
in an activity called community circle to get to know each

classroom. School wide life skills are practiced and reinforced
in the classroom; see your school calendar for each month’s
focus. To see more about what students are learning in social
