Welcome
to ESL
Our goal at Camelview Elementary School is to assist students’
in making one year’s academic growth while learning in a risk-free
environment where students feel comfortable and safe. We at Camelview
value our students’ language and culture as we incorporate
and construct a program that is appropriate for all of our students
at Camelview School.
The English as a Second Language Program (ESL) at Camelview provide
services to English Language Learners (ELL) in Kindergarten to Third
grades. Students serviced are children whose native language is
other than English. The assessment used to determine entry into
ESL program is the Stanford English Language Proficiency (SELP)
test.
Students at Camelview are placed in different models of ESL program
based on SELP scores and the number of years students have attended
U.S. schools.

support to teachers. Instruction focuses on oral language development
and reinforcing the language arts curriculum in reading, writing,
speaking and listening.
Teachers in the Madison School District are educated in Sheltered
English Immersion (SEI) structures in order to accommodate English
Language Learners in the mainstream classroom.
Our language objectives are based on the ELL Standards and our content
objectives are based on the Arizona State Language Arts Standards
A Description of the ELL Models in Madison
SEI
Model: - The Madison SEI Model is
a small group instruction for ELL students identified as Pre- Emergent,
Emergent, Basic, and Intermediate on the SELP and who have attended
U. S. schools for less than one year. Students are considered for
a second year of SEI, if they do not score Proficient on the SELP,
have been in U.S. schools for less than 2 years, and their classroom
performance and State and District assessments indicate further
small group SEI support is necessary.
The school’s ELL teacher instructs these students for 50 -
90 minutes/day in basic SEI strategies to develop reading, writing,
speaking, and listening skills in English. The strategies include:
Comprehensible Input, Vocabulary Development, Building Background
Knowledge, /Specific and Immediate Feedback, Student Engagement
Opportunities and Varied Grouping Structures.
At all other times in the school day, the ELL students are mainstreamed
with their similarly aged peers. Thus, these students have the opportunity
for direct, intensive, content-based language instruction as well
as the benefit of appropriate language models from their peers.
Mainstream
Model:
– In Madison the ELL mainstream model consists of students
who are at Proficient on the SELP or have been in the U.S for 2
or more years.
Mainstream Model with SEI Support:
– In Madison some ELL students who have not scored Proficient
on the SELP remain in the general education classrooms with their
peers, but have the benefit of language/content support from the
ELL teacher. The ELL teacher comes into their room anywhere from
60-90 minutes per week, depending on the student’s language/academic
needs.
